The AMU-IUC has now transitioned into its second phase after successfully concluding the first phase in August 2022.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>During the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vliruos.be\/en\/projects\/project\/22?pid=3604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vliruos.be\/en\/projects\/project\/22?pid=3604\">first phase<\/a><\/span> (a.k.a \u2018AMU-IUC Program\u2019), the AMU-IUC Program focused on enhancing AMU\u2019s infrastructure and research capabilities \u2013 empowering 19 doctoral study outcomes and yielding commendable results in community outreach activities \u2013<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amu.edu.et\/3054-the-catholic-university-of-leuven-ku-leuven-donated-high-end-ict-equipment-to-amu-totaling-2-229-766-85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investing around 31 million Birr<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Now, entering its <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pdIIp-gmgJw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pdIIp-gmgJw\">second phase<\/a><\/span> (a.k.a \u2018AMU-IUC Project\u2019) from September 2022 to August 2027, the AMU-IUC Project aims to uphold academic and developmental objectives while introducing new components, including a renewed emphasis on outreach efforts, gender mainstreaming, and LNOB (Leave No One Behind) principle.<\/p>\n<p>During a recent visit to AMU-IUC Project, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kuleuven.be\/wieiswie\/en\/person\/00010351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Roel Merckx<\/a><\/span>, Flemish Project Coordinator, highlighted the project has continued to make waves with its <i>&#8220;remarkable progress and inspiring leadership&#8221;<\/i>.\u00a0He engaged in critical discussions and field observations of community outreach activities across various sub-projects.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:themeisle-blocks\/advanced-columns --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d1874e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9d1874e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0cc1879 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"0cc1879\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4dd89f7 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4dd89f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Reflecting on his experiences in Arba Minch, he remarked, <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m warmly greeted by a highly motivated team from the AMU-IUC Project.&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><em>&#8220;<\/em>&#8230; the dedication and enthusiasm of young AMU-IUC Project team and PhD students towards&nbsp;<\/i><i>their university is truly impressive.&#8221;<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdd0a6d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"fdd0a6d\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e84e653 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e84e653\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*! He highlighted the area&#8217;s significance as a sanctuary for migrating bird species, a sight that left a lasting impression on him.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he shared insights from the visit to the Forty Springs Forest, where he explored the impact of flooding on the forest and its reliance on remarkably pure underground water for survival. He underscored the importance of protecting Chamo Lake from facing the same fate as Abaya Lake due to inadequate management, noting the potential damage observed during the visit.<\/p>\n<p>Expressing his dismay, a Prof. Roel lamented, <em>&#8220;It is disheartening to note that the bridge, which <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">facilitated access to Nechsar Park from the opposite side of Lake Chamo,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 1rem;\">has been damaged beyond use.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 1rem;\"><em>We cannot cross the river; we cannot do that walk anymore.&#8221;<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s a regrettable situation,&#8221; <\/em>he added<em>, <\/em>reflecting the sentiments shared by many.<em> &#8220;What will become of this area in the next 50 or 100 years? How will it survive?&#8221; <\/em>These poignant questions underscore the gravity of the current predicament and the pressing need for proactive measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Furthermore, Prof. Roel emphasized that the IUC project represents a small yet meaningful contribution to the current situation. He expressed the aspiration that by training a sufficient number of individuals from AMU, they will be equipped to take on responsibility and play a vital role in managing their own country. Highlighting a sense of optimism, he believes that such efforts will pave the way for positive transformations, ultimately shaping a better future.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">In his concluding statement, Prof. Roel underscored the leadership roles assumed by PhD students and their active engagement in diverse activities. He particularly highlighted the significant advancements observed in the laboratory and restoration site within the Chamo Buffer Zone, along with the ongoing projects in Geresse and Kemele Oro.
