The workshop, titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Improving Maternal and Child Health in the South Ethiopian Rift Valley: Public Health Research in the Service of Community from Evidence to Practice<\/strong>,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served as a platform for disseminating crucial findings to those capable of enacting meaningful change.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the key participants was <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/biblio.ugent.be\/person\/802002554469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prof. Dr. Souheila Abbeddou<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from the <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ugent.be\/ge\/phpc\/en\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Public Health <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Primary Care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Ghent University<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Belgium, and the Flemish Project Leader of RSP-3. Prof. Souheila has been instrumental in the project&#8217;s progress and served as a promoter for the two PhD research projects presented at the workshop, alongside her colleagues.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The PhD research presented highlighted the region&#8217;s pressing public health challenges and the innovative solutions being developed to address them:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1e5b88 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"e1e5b88\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2254dc3 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2254dc3\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19afe0a elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19afe0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Dr. Befikadu Tariku<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented his research on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIron and Vitamin A Supplementation on Cognitive Development and Nutritional Status.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur research revealed that chronic malnutrition, particularly <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4Fx72r7BKb0&amp;ab_channel=WorldHealthOrganization%28WHO%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">stunting<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is associated with impaired cognitive abilities during school age,\u201d Dr. Befikadu explained. She identified cultural beliefs, accessibility challenges such as distance, and mistrust due to disrespectful care at healthcare facilities as key factors driving the choice of home births. She also highlighted the strides made in bolstering laboratory capacity and infrastructure, which are essential for sustaining ongoing research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The workshop was further honored by the presence of Mr. Wondimagen Taye, Director of the South Ethiopia Region Public Health Institute, who lauded the collaborative efforts between Arba Minch University, the AMU-IUC, and the Belgian government. He urged the researchers to continue applying their findings to tackle the pressing health challenges the local community faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">As the RSP-3 project progresses, the commitment to advancing maternal and child health in the South Ethiopian Rift Valley remains strong.
