Many schools lacked functional computer labs, reliable internet, and modern tools, leaving students dependent on chalkboards and photocopied handouts<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.15379\/ijmst.v10i2.1271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 While classrooms elsewhere adopted online learning, local students struggled to access knowledge at a pace aligned with the modern world. This gap was more than technological\u2014it shaped opportunity, confidence, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">young people\u2019s ability to participate fully in an increasingly connected era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This reality was evident in everyday classroom experiences.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both students and teachers carried the burden of this divide.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Students had limited opportunities to develop essential digital skills,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">while teachers spent extra hours reproducing outdated materials just to sustain lessons.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Frustration was common, yet it was accompanied by a quiet determination.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Teachers and students alike aspired to a learning environment that was more interactive, engaging, and reflective of the digital age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Over the past two years, the AMU\u2013IUC Project\u2019s Transversal Institutional Strengthening sub-Project (TISP-1) has been spearheading changes in education, research, and community outreach at Arba Minch University (AMU),\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as well as in surrounding educational institutions across Arba Minch City and Zuria Woreda. Led by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.vub.be\/en\/persons\/frederik-questier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Dr. Frederik Quiester <\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vub.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vrije Universiteit Brussels<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">, Belgium, and Alazar Baharu of AMU, the project\u2019s second phase has placed strong emphasis on community outreach. During this period, TISP-1 has made notable progress in upgrading ICT and library infrastructure and services, while also supporting the community\u2019s adoption of new knowledge and technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Building on this leadership,\u00a0the growing demand for digital empowerment became a central driver of TISP-1\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Through coordinated planning, technical expertise, and resource alignment, the project enabled practical steps toward improving digital access for both students and teachers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">This focused approach has opened pathways for schools and the university to engage more effectively with digital tools and systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The reach of TISP-1 extends well beyond AMU.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Its interventions now benefit a wide network of local institutions, including four (4) secondary schools\u2014Arba Minch, Chamo, Shelle, and Lante\u2014alongside Kemele Oro Primary and Middle School, Arba Minch Teachers\u2019 Education College, Arba Minch Health Sciences College, and Arba Minch City Public Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More than four (4) computer labs have been established across partner schools and the public library,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">each equipped with Wi-Fi access and strengthened network infrastructure. Lante Secondary School, now supported by a 20 Mbps connection\u2014the fastest in the area\u2014has emerged as a practical hub for digital engagement.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">Altogether<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1rem;\">, these interventions directly benefit an estimated 1,390 students and 350 teachers, providing access to online libraries, blended learning tools, and interactive resources that were previously unavailable.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As Alazar Baharu, Local Project Leader of TISP-1, noted, \u201cWe are seeing a new culture of digital learning emerge.\u201d This transformation goes beyond infrastructure; it is gradually reshaping how teaching and learning take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30c4767 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"30c4767\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37fe7c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"37fe7c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*! Students and teachers now have consistent access to computers, internet connectivity, and digital platforms.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Trained staff are in place to maintain the systems and support their integration into daily teaching and learning activities.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Recognition from local authorities and community members has strengthened the project\u2019s credibility, while early results indicate improved student engagement and instructional practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">With the necessary infrastructure, skills, and local ownership now established, TISP-1 partner institutions are well-positioned to sustain and build on these gains.
